Abstract

Significant biologic differences exist between autogenous bone and xenografts used for increasing boney volume and topography for placement of endosseous implants. Understanding the principles and executing them correctly is critical for favorable outcomes. This presentation will discuss the technique and the rationale for vertical as well as horizontal alveolar augmentations.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the differences between the healing characteristics of autogenous vs allografts and xenografts.
  • Understanding the effect of functional loads and length of implants.
  • Understanding the fundamentals of autogenous block graft fixation; lag vs positional screws.
