Options for Bony and Soft Tissue Reconstruction in the Maxillofacial Region
Abstract
Maxillofacial defects secondary to trauma or tumor ablation can have significant physiological and psychological impacts due to their functional and esthetic impact. The maxillofacial region has a rich blood supply and healing potential but its complex anatomical structures pose a significant challenge during maxillofacial reconstruction. There are multiple reconstruction options available for hard and soft tissue defects, each having their own advantage and disadvantages when considering the type of defect, location, history of radiation, treatment timeline, predictability of reconstruction option and the patient’s goals and expectations.
Learning Objectives
- Describe reconstructive options for composite maxillofacial defects.
