Crazy Things We Do To Give People Smiles
Abstract
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have a significant and unique skill set to reconstruct our significantly debilitated patients. One of our biggest strengths is our ability to utilize a variety of surgical techniques to create a functional and esthetic oral reconstruction. There are a variety of approaches using a graft-less approach, grafting approach or flap based reconstruction. Both hard tissue and soft tissue reconstructive elements of reconstruction will be discussed. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon will come away understanding the options available for reconstruction and be able to better handle complicated maxillofacial reconstruction with a focus on a functional and esthetic outcome.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the functional matrix hypothesis and its relation to oral reconstruction.
- Apply soft tissue grafting to reconstruct keratinized tissue and vestibular depth.
- Apply bone grafting and graft less approaches to reconstruct the severely atrophic maxilla and mandible.
- Be oriented to the application of the latest technology to implement an immediate functional reconstruction in free flaps.
