Patient-Centered Approaches to Surgery in Maxillofacial Oncology and Benign Pathology
Abstract
The webinar will highlight current reconstructive methods used in benign and malignant head and neck pathology. These methods include tissue engineering, microvascular reconstruction, and immediate dental rehabilitation using computer-aided surgical planning. We will discuss the importance of providing patient-specific reconstruction, by identifying from the gamut of surgical options, the option that fits best with the patients needs and the complexity of their pathology. We will further discuss the current research landscape in oral cancer, how the demographics of oral cancer patients have shifted in the past years toward younger patients with no traditional risk factors, and the implications for surgical treatment in this group of patients.
Learning Objectives
1. Understand the case selection process for tissue engineering versus microvascular reconstruction.
2. Describe the treatment options available for patients with benign versus malignant head and neck pathology.
3. Describe the changes in risk factors for oral cancer.
