Reconstruction of Maxillectomy Defects
Abstract
Maxillectomy defects can result from the surgical treatment of maxillary benign and malignant pathologies. The reconstruction of maxillectomy defects follows a defect-driven approach and must also take into consideration patient, pathologic, and treatment-related factors. The reconstructive surgeon should consider a wide range of reconstructive options including obturator prostheses, locoregional flaps, free tissue transfer, dental implantation, and patient specific prostheses. Technological advances including navigation, computer-aided design, and 3D printing can be used to optimize reconstructive outcomes in these cases.
