Osteo Science Foundation Board Chair, Mark E. K. Wong, DDS, FACD, FACS, received the Robert V. Walker Distinguished Service Award on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at the 104th AAOMS Annual Meeting Opening Ceremony. This award recognizes significant contributions to the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and is the highest accolade presented by the AAOMS.
“Robert V. Walker had an enormous impact on our specialty. Throughout his career, he served as a teacher, mentor and friend to hundreds of Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons – influencing multiple generations of residents, researchers and practitioners.
He served as President or Chair of AAOMS, ABOMS and the OMS Foundation and was honored with just about every award the OMS specialty has to offer. But he is best remembered for his generosity of spirit.”

Dr. Mark Wong is Professor and the Bernard and Gloria Katz Endowed Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, where he also serves as the Director of Residency Training. Dr. Wong is a Past-President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, and the International Board for the Certification of Specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His clinical and research interests are focused on reconstructive surgery, tissue engineering of bone, and the biomechanical characterization and regeneration of the temporomandibular joint. His research is funded by the NIH and the Department of Defense where he serves as the Co-Director of the Craniofacial Focus Group for the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Wong is the author of over 97 peer reviewed articles, 17 book chapters, and one textbook on regenerative medicine, and has served on a number of educational and research committees for AAOMS.
