Colonya C. Calhoun DDS, PhD

Colonya C. Calhoun DDS, PhD, is the Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Hospital Dentistry and Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.  She holds an Assistant Professor, Clinical Series appointment at Charles R. Drew University and aLecturer position in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry. Dr. Calhoun received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1992 from Eastern Michigan University and her D.D.S degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1997. She completed her internship at the University of Maryland Medical System, Baltimore in 1998 and completed her residency at Martin Luther King/Charles R. Drew University in 2004 both in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2008, Dr. Calhoun completed a PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles in the Department of Oral Biology, School of Dentistry. 

Dr. Calhoun’s basic science and translational research interests include soft and hard tissue regeneration using mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors to regenerate corneal, mucosal and bone tissue. Her clinical research focus is wound healing in MRONJ, ORN and post-ablative patients.

Dr. Calhoun has received numerous awards and fellowships including National Institute of Dental Research and Craniofacial Research Fellowship from 2001-2005.  She was also the recipient of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Fellowship and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Research Supplement from 2007-2009.

In addition to her research endeavors Dr. Calhoun serves as a general anesthesia and conscious sedation evaluator for the Dental Board of California. She also serves as advisor for the UCLA Hospital Dentistry Interest Group and mentors’ students at all levels of education for medical/dental careers. Dr. Calhoun is also the founder of the CCI STEM Award as well as the CBEM Young Women Entrepreneurs Award.

Dr. Calhoun holds professional memberships in the National Dental Association,

Christian Medical and Dental Society, American Dental Education Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, National Management Association, California Dental Association, Harbor Dental Society California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, American Association of Cancer Research, and the International Association of Dental Research/American Association of Dental Research.
