Jay P. Malmquist, DMD is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with advanced training and experience with dental implants, bone regeneration, and bone grafting. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon and the University of Oregon Dental School, and completed a rotating internship in the US Army and a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University. His private practice is in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Malmquist has authored numerous articles and several chapters in textbooks on implants, bone grafting tissue engineering, and bone regeneration. He lectures nationally and internationally on topics of implant placement, bone grafting and various bone proteins and blood modifiers. He pursued extensive research on bone physiology and regeneration at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and is now actively engaged in research protocols in the evolution of bone proteins and bone grafting techniques. He is a past affiliate scientist at the Yerkes Primate center in Atlanta, Georga. Dr. Malmquist traveled to Sweden early in his career and trained with the original founder of the concepts of osseointegration and implant reconstruction.
Dr. Malmquist is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where he served as an examiner seven years. Dr. Malmquist is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is on the staff at several Portland-area hospitals providing trauma support for maxillofacial injuries.
He has shared his knowledge with others as a professor at Oregon Health Science University, contributing to the education of students and residents in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Malmquist has distinguished himself as the first Treasurer and first President of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from the Pacific Northwest. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons represent more than 8,000 surgeons throughout the United States. He has also been honored with visiting professorships at the University of California, University of Tennessee, University of Nebraska, University of Alabama, University of Indiana and the University of Minnesota. He is a reviewer for several peer reviewed Journals in implant surgery and is currently the chairman of the Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation; Past Chairman of Osteo Science Foundation and current President-elect of the Academy of Osseointegration.
Regarding our experience or focus level; we try and offer a full rounded experience to include routine OMFS, bone grafting, implant care including Zygomatic Implant placement, full-service Out Patient OR which allows for various TMJ surgeries including arthroscopy, arthrocentisis, and open surgeries. Also moderate experience in Orthognathic Surgery. Of course, a full experience in implant care utilizing various blood modifiers and bone protein surgery, and finally daily lectures on various aspects of OMFS in comfortable surroundings of a conference room. One on one teaching is the hallmark with office visit. The office enjoys the latest full content of high tech equipment for all aspects of OMFS. We are fully digital in treatment planning of implants, ortho surgery and TMJ surgeries. We employ the latest software for all treatment planning experiences. Finally, the emphasis of practice management is part of the experience. We are able with proper notice to have 2 or 4-week visits. We are walking distance from hotels, shops and food vendors. We work 5 days a week from 730 am to 5 pm. With notice, we will try and impact the schedule for more complicated cases although we will certainly provide a look into daily OMFS practice.
Michael P. Dr. Malmquist has a special interest in regenerative medicine and implant reconstructive surgery. Dr. Malmquist was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from Jesuit high school, he attended The Citadel: Military College of South Carolina where he graduated with distinct honors. He continued his education at Boston University School of Dental Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree.
Following dental school, Dr. Malmquist continued his education/training specializing in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the prestigious Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. After residency, he spent a full year with Dr. Pedro Franco in Dallas TX, specializing in implant therapy, full mouth reconstruction, orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery.
In 2015, Dr. Malmquist returned to Portland, Oregon to work alongside his father Dr. Jay P. Malmquist. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Malmquist has published multiple articles and chapters in peer review journals and textbooks. He has lectured nationally on various topics pertaining to the specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He has participated in medical outreach programs to underserved communities both foreign and domestic.
Aside from many interests in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Malmquist is an avid Oregon Duck and Portland Trailblazer fan. He loves spending time with his family and friends, especially his wife Ida and their daughter Mila.
